We’ve seen quite a number of fighting video games being turned into animated movies and series. There’s Street Fighter II animated movie (one of my all-time favorites), Battle Arena Toshinden, Mortal Kombat, and many others. Tekken - The Motion Picture is no different. I got a copy of this movie from a set of Anime movies I bought from a friend.

This one-hour long movie that came out in 1997 seems like it’s intended to be pure action. I mean it has everything from guns, missiles, fighting robots, martial arts guys and girls, and even dinosaurs that can turn invisible and do power-punch combinations like Manny Pacquiao. They tried to put some emotional elements in the characters and it worked just fine but not that impressive. The setting seems like science fictional with all the high-tech stuff but with a mix of traditional cultures with all those martial arts.

The two main characters in the story are Jun Kazama and Kazuya Mishima. Jun is martial artist who works as a cop. She was assigned to investigate on the Mishima Zaibatsu which is lead by Heihachi Mishima, Kazuya’s father. The police found out that Mishima’s group could be planning to start a war so they sent Jun to infiltrate the group’s hideout by joining a martial arts competition sponsored by the Mishima Zaibatsu. Jun was accompanied by a Hong Kong police with martial arts skills, Lei Wulong. Jun was a friend to Kazuya when they were young and she witnessed how Heihachi threw his son on a cliff as his way of proving his son’s stength. Kazuya survived but because of that incident, he grew up with all the anger in his heart for his father.

I watched an English version of this movie. I did some research and found out that it was still originated in Japan. I had some doubts because unlike most modern anime movies that come out of Japan, this one has a pretty shallow story. But the anime elements appear in the characters.

The movie didn’t impress me that much. Not that I didn’t like it but it’s something that can amaze you and take you to another world like some of the anime movies that we see. And it’s not much of an art form. But I actually think its just OK and I didn’t feel like I wasted my time watching it because sometimes I also like to see something simple to spend some of my spare time.

I expect a lot of people who watch anime movies with deep emotions, extreme martial arts action, and cutting-edge graphics to find this movie a bit boring. But for me, I think it was ok. The story and other elements seemed a bit childish to me but I can’t recommend this to anyone below 18 years of age since it contains a lot of violence and some nudity.
